Senior services

Property taxes weigh heaviest on people living on a fixed income. Illinois has four relief programs for senior homeowners, and this office has a team whose job is to help you claim them.

Four programs

You may qualify for more than one. If you are not sure which apply to you, call us and we will go through it together.

Senior Homestead Exemption

An annual exemption off your equalized assessed value for owner-occupiers aged 65 and over. Once granted it renews automatically each year.

Low-Income Senior Assessment Freeze

Holds your assessed value steady for as long as you qualify, if your household income is under the limit. Renewed annually.

Real Estate Tax Deferral

The State of Illinois pays your property tax and treats it as a loan against the property, repayable on sale or death.

How deferral works

Benefit Access Program

A license plate discount and a free transit ride card for seniors under the income limit. Applications are online only, and we complete them with you.

We will help you apply

Assessor office staff members are available to help seniors apply for these programs. Call the office to schedule an appointment.

How much relief you receive may depend on which programs you qualify for, your household income, and/or your property tax rate.

These programs are available to all qualifying seniors. Make sure you are receiving the benefits you deserve.
